Dummies Guide to DMOZ.ORG
The Open Directory is a human edited directory of web sites. It differs from search engines such as Google and AltaVista, that build a list of web sites by having automated programs search through the web looking at pages and text in the pages, and creating massive indexes of text, which are then used to try to find relevant matches for searches.
