ODP Search Working Again

Posted May 1, 2005

ODP Search - which has for the last few weeks failed to search most of the time - is now working again. However the results are still outdated. Allow about another week for the results to catch up to the RDF data.

Remember, even when it works, ODP search is not sophisticated in it’s search function and is typically about a week behind the real data. So a site just added that displays correctly in a category will not show up in search. Conversely, a site deleted or moved, will still show the old category in the search.

Hello world!

Well this is really “Hello again” - the posts before this were from a Xanga blog that I stopped posting to. I’m vaguely thinking about starting this blog again.

Coding for Specific Browsers -

Why are you wasting my time?

So I just wasted a whole bunch of time on a site review - here is what I had to go through.

First the site was bilingual, but the description was not supplied in
English, and second the link to the English content was almost
invisible, since it was already listed in the main language, I almost
deleted it, but just happened to see the word English at the last
minute.

Then I tried looking at the site in the Firefox browser, and the links
to the internal pages did not work. Again, I almost deleted the site as
being under construction.

But I tried looking at it with the Opera browser - a little more
promising, the links to the inner pages lit up, but still did not go
anywhere.

Finally I reviewed again with Internet Explore and it seems the site was designed for it only. Brain dead site designer at work.

Lucky I got this far, not many editors have all these browsers installed, and most editors would have deleted it by now.

OK, so now I’m ready to write a description, but I really am annoyed I
had to waste all this time. So it probably won’t get my best effort.
